Happy Resurrection Day

Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and not a pagan goddess of fertility. Ironically this custom of bunnies and eggs all came about because of marketing. In the second century, Christian missionaries trying to make Christianity more attractive turned pagan festivals into Christian holidays.

Unlike Christmas, we know based on historical record that this is the correct basic time when Jesus died and therefore it’s accurate to remember Jesus’ death and resurrection. But we should really consider all the other customs that are associated with this day. Mystical bunnies and embracing a candy laced eating orgy should really be reconsidered for a more reverent day of reflection.

Now to maintain transparency and honesty, we took our grandchild to an Easter egg hunt at a church and though it was ironic they were sharing the Gospel before the “hunt” and opportunity to sit on the Easter Bunny’s lap. I will give bonus points to anyone that can find in the Bible the reason we call this Easter.

Google quickly finds the goddess’s name is Eastre of Eostre which Easter is derived from. As much as it seems innocent, I think sitting on a bunny’s lap at church asking for presents has some moral problems we may want to address.
