Well as I posted yesterday our new dog slipped off her collar while on a run Thursday night. To set this up, we got her from Ohio two days prior, so she was not familiar with Georgia at all. To make sure she didn’t think the road was part of her territory I drove her to the greenway, about ½ a mile away over a big hill.
We ran about 1 mile down the trail before she slipped off and took off into the woods. She slipped off because she did not like boardwalks, which the first ¼ mile was on, I didn’t think the second short one would be that dramatic. We combed the area that night with no luck or hearing even a bark. Then the rain came!!
The greenway flooded and the large area around the boardwalk back to parking was underwater, so the boardwalk was the only way back about 2 or 3 hours after she split. I was out at 5am looking and Katy was posting “LOST” posters all afternoon, while taking 3 to 4 more trips around the greenway calling for her. I did one last excursion before sundown, this time walking a very circuitous route from the house; I covered 3.5 miles with no sign.
At midnight a dog was barking. I assumed it was Ollie with a renewed interest in barking at the donkey. He protects us from the donkey about once a week between midnight and 3am, so nothing unusual there. But this time it was Lilly!! The dog who has only explored the “grounds” on leash once or twice came home after being lost for over 24 hours in a new area with all her paths home were flooded. Dumb luck or a very smart dog or God answering prayers, you decide.
