Psalms 63 – 65
Verse 63:1 is a verse that plays through my head constantly:
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
This has been one of those verses I have tried to memorize, but for whatever reason have not. But think about what it is saying, how it’s your entire being desires God. I know that is something I try to sometimes “force” in my mind, but it is difficult to “get.” I do earnestly seek God, but only sometimes does my soul or body yearn for God. Then it’s rare that I am yearning for him like water in the desert.
Think about this analogy, we live in a world for the most part that rejects God or will twist Him into our image. We take chapter 1 of Genesis and feel the “image” of God is the meat suit we live in, with that there are natural limitations which we often apply to God subconsciously. How can God be “omnipresent” when He is made in “our image”? So when we read about these desires it becomes difficult to imagine desiring an unseen God this way.
Verse 63:8 keeps expanding on this and in a sense explains God:
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
The soul is the key here when we go back to Genesis 1. When God made us in His image, if we apply this to the soul and not the body, the idea God can be omnipresent is easy. He is no longer bound to a “meat suit” and can be the “energy” of the universe. The soul, or some say the spirit, is the connection we have with God. It’s that “energy” that drives our bodies and therefore causes it to yearn for God.
Verse 64:10 again has our “souls” connecting with God in taking “refuge”:
Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD
and take refuge in him!
Let all the upright in heart exult!
Again we can “think” about taking refuge in God all we want, it’s really not until we “feel” that refuge that we bind with God. I personally “bind” to God in many ways in life, but the key comes from the first verse we looked at where I “earnestly” seek Him. If we just expect life to happen and the connection made without searching we often don’t find God. We have to make the connection on all levels of thought, feelings and emotion to get a yearning.
I have found the need to study and pray on a daily basis to maintain that connection. I have a “logical” brain which has grown up with an intense interest in science. These two tend to dismiss God quickly because so much of what is taught is God does not exist. This is where I tend to find God, in that “mystery” area of the sciences. Quantum mechanics does more to prove God’s existence than disprove it. Ironically, it came to explain away the “mysteries” by dismissing God by trying to explain energy and the atomic “space” where the unexplained exists. If I don’t constantly search and study, I find that I could quickly drift into mainstream science’s disbelief.
