Getting Old

Psalm 92:14 –

Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.

Welcome to getting excited about this kind of stuff. Well at least for this old man! Think about it, this Psalm implies we can be productive well into our old age! At least I can get excited about this as I am pushing 50. As you time on this earth gets moves the “decades” always have some meaning. Think about it, your teens means start to freedom and the twenties means moving into adulthood! One thing we cannot stop is growing up, but as we get older that doesn’t mean we need to stop learning and being productive.

Doesn’t matter if your body is in decay, the key to “remain vital and green” is keeping your mind sharp. It doesn’t hurt to stay active and keep the “juices flowing” but never stop trying to learn and expand. Think about a fruit tree and how it produces fruit. Once the tree stops growing it starts to slow down of its production of fruit. So the key to remaining fruitful is to continue growing.

Simple way to do this, as young adults, is to continue the spirit of study from school. Continue to strive to learn new things and don’t be afraid of failure. I think that’s the main reason we get in a rut and stop producing “fruit”, we tend to fear blowing it. We decide not to try something either because we believe we cannot risk failure for the family or do not want to experience a setback. Believe me I know that feeling! It can be paralyzing at times but once you learn how a slip here and there is like pruning a tree, you become stronger and continue to grow.
