1 Peter 1:6 –
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.
We tend to think of life as a Christian as a walk in the park. Once you become a “follower” of Christ all you wishes and desires will be granted. There will be nothing but sunshine and blue skies from this point forward. And then reality hits us smack in the face! We have the same trials and difficulties we did before that point. Our debts still remain, our bodies are still frail, we still get sucked into temptations and we eventually die. Jesus never promised a rosy life here on earth, but one after death with a heavenly father.
This “life” after death is something I still have an issue wrapping my mind around. Will it be some great mansion on puffs of clouds or a recreation of earth but without trials? I tend to think it’s whatever we want, since our bodies will no longer limit our spirit and therefore we may create our reality. But again that may or may not be the case; I have no idea and therefore don’t tend to focus on it. My view of Jesus and God come more from the “here and now” and less from the future with God.
One may argue that if we are going through the same trails and a nonbeliever what is the hope then? Peter’s warning give us hope of an afterlife far greater than anything we can imagine here on earth, with just one caveat and that’s follow Jesus. Now saying I can’t imagine the “afterlife” doesn’t mean I don’t believe it will happen. My view is different from most; I look at the “afterlife” more as “conservation of energy” than anything else. Our bodies are powered by energy that will not be destroyed; but take on another form.
Now Peter warns us life is not easy and that’s the fact for first century Christian. We complain about our “trials” of financial dismay or relational issue, but how many of us are being tortured for believing in Jesus? Think about it Peter was crucified, Andrew was bound to death, James (son of Zebedee) was beheaded, Phillip was crucified, Bartholomew was beaten, crucified and beheaded, Thomas was run through with a lance, Mathew was slain by a sword, James (son of Alphaeus) was beaten to death, Thaddeus was shot by arrows and Simon was crucified. Only John died of “natural” causes but was banished. So while we complain of this or that, remember who paid the real price! Also, remember the peace you have in Christ over the turmoil you had before. So yes life will be hard, but the knowledge the greatest power is with you is just way too cool!!
