Lets Talk About The Poor And Our Responsibility To Them

Psalms 111 – 113

Verse 111:10 talks about our relationship with God:

Reverence for the Eternal is the first step toward wisdom.
    All those who worship Him have a good understanding.
    His praise will echo through eternity!

This is not a causal relationship where God is our “mate” as Crocodile Dundee said once in a bar. No we need to really respect God and stop making Him an object of our needs. He may be “like” a close friend, but He also knows what you need verses what you desire. Unlike a friend, God will step in when He can to stop you from fulfilling your destructive desires.

The key is God is above all and we really need to respect that.

Verse 112:9 talks about our charity:

They give freely to the poor;
    their righteousness endures for all time;
    their strength and power is established in honor.

We really need to stop holding on with a death grip to our cash. Honestly, if we actually did what God was asking our “tithe” would be for helping the church and we would be giving over and above to the poor. Just because we “tithe” does not mean we stop our generosity. No, on the contrary because the “tithe” was intended to support the church, not support the poor. Your generosity is used for that, while only 10% of the church’s operational budget technically should be allocated for that … of course unless there are excess funds donated.

Verse 113:7 is very critical for all to obey:

He gathers up the poor from their dirt floors,
    pulls the needy from the trash heaps,

How does God do this? Does He reach down from heaven and scoop up the poor? Nope, He sends the Holy Spirit to tell US to do it. It’s really that simple, when we get that “feeling” we need to help someone and then justify not by saying they will just get booze or crack that is SATAN intercepting God’s work through US!!
