Don’t Expect To Immediately Jump Out of the Boat

In Luke 5:5 we have Peter being asked to fish again:

And Simon answering said unto him,
Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at
thy word I will let down the net.

Jesus did not start by asking Peter to go make disciples in
the face of possible death, that came later. No Jesus built Peter’s faith
incrementally. The first ask was just to let down the nets that they had just
finished cleaning after a long unsuccessful night of fishing. He complained,
yet complied with the rabbi.

. From there he had one of his biggest catches
and followed Jesus from that point on.

As we build our faith don’t expect to leap frog into say
preaching the Word. No, God takes us step by step to build our faith. A little
ask, turns into a slightly greater one and so on. Think of how Moses was
trained before he led the people from Israel. He had a temper that needed to be
wrestled with as well as spiritual training. He was raised in royalty, humbled in
exile and for almost 60 years trained to lead Israel from slavery.

Peter was slowly trained to the point he walked on water.
Notice Jesus did not ask him to walk on water to fetch the nets right from the
start.

We tend to expect it all now and not tomorrow or next year.
I know many “faithful” who feel they have waited all their lives and still are
not connecting with God. Often this is a “season” of winter where God wants us
to go deeper. So don’t despair and follow those small still voices. If you feel
a “prompt” to give, do so and tell them why.

The key is we keep following those little asks and God
will continue with greater ones.
