Psalms 137 – 139
Verse 137:4 shows the sorrow of the people in exile:
How could we sing a song about the Eternal
in a land so foreign, while still tormented, brokenhearted, homesick?
Please don’t make us sing this song.
This Psalm is sad since it shows the misery of the people in exile. We have a difficult time imagining this since travel is so easy, but imagine if you got kicked out of the USA and had to live in a nation that worshiped demons. If you study Satan’s roots in the world they all stem from Babylon!
Verse 138:3 is comforting:
On the day I needed You, I called, and You responded
and infused my soul with strength.
This Psalm is comforting where David lets us know God is always with us. All we need to do is call on him. I will say from past experience that often God’s answer is not what we want, but what is right. I think of Bruce Almighty, where Bruce is given the job of God and just grants everyone’s prayers. Riots ensue since thousands won the lottery which meant the millions were diluted to a few hundred for each winner. Sure everyone got what they desired, but it was not what they wanted. Anyway I am drifting, this Psalm tells us that God is there for US!!
Now Psalm 139 shows us the intimacy of God that He cares about your every detail. I could go through this verse by verse but want to focus on verses 139:23 & 24:
23 Explore me, O God, and know the real me. Dig deeply and discover who I am.
Put me to the test and watch how I handle the strain.
24 Examine me to see if there is an evil bone in me,
and guide me down Your path forever.
Would you really want this? Doesn’t matter, God knows it anyway. Imagine if God dug deep into your every thought, you dark corners and exposed them for the entire world to examine. I will get intimate here but imagine the pain if you were imagining another woman while having “relations” with your wife and that was exposed to your wife. That is why though is so critical to examine, your body tends to follow your mind and sure adultery did not happen but if that though became real the marriage could easily fail.
God will train you for facing evil; you just need to understand all of your inner thoughts are already exposed. The key is pray for God to correct your mind BEFORE the body follows. The most common scenario of failed marriages is thinking about others, looking at others and finally playing with others. JUST DON’T DO IT!!!
