Song of Songs 1:15 –
How beautiful you are, my darling, how beautiful! Your eyes are like doves.
Solomon writes this book almost like a play where it’s broken out into different people speaking. I wonder if it was used as an example for “students” to understand love or if it was a conversation between two people in love. Either way it’s here today as a beautiful love poem, which any young gentleman should read before writing notes to their loved one. As we start into this book, one cannot help but notice the adoration felt between these two people.
Love in this context is the Greek “Eros” love, that intimate and romantic love that is actually quite rare. I think women actually get this more than guys; they go beyond the physical attraction and try to go deep. Unfortunately, most men these days think “love” is when we get an erection! You read this a few times and you see the affection each feels for one and other. It’s not a current rap/hip hop song, talking about brutal sexual encounters but rather honest love.
Our society is going in the wrong direction with the “love” songs. My parents questioned “my music” with the Eagles saying “Take it Easy”, or Stephen Stills saying “Love the One Your With” or Elton saying “The Bitch Is Back”. Today this “ain’t nothing” compared to the hip-hop that is being listened to by many people. I have to admit I got sucked into it to with Cee-Lo’s “F### You”, which has a cute video of a jilted lover growing up. And again that “ain’t nothing” compared to some of the stuff I have heard in “someone’s” iPod!! We need to respect each other and look closely at Solomon as an example and not 2 Live Crew or Eazy-E.
One thing my study Bible had for this verse I found interesting was saying this showed God’s view on sexuality. I found this odd, because I reread the chapter and did not get this view. Sure it’s demonstrates honor and true love, but does not get into sex at all. Sure I may be simple and cannot read between the lines too well, but to me it’s a simple love story. At the same time of saying that I focused on sex in my “thought” so maybe God does have a hidden agenda. The difference is the study Bible says God “reveals” His view and I compared His view with the direction society has gone today. Read it and tell me what you think!!
