Romans 2:14 & 15 –
<14>Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. <15> They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.
In this chapter Paul is making it clear to everyone, both Jew and Gentile, the penalty of sin. Interestingly, it mentions God will judge the Gentile just as strict as the Jew even though they do not know the law. Granted the Jew will be held to a slightly higher standard because they have the law and many choose to ignore it. We as Christians quickly pull ourselves into the having to live by the standards of the Jews, since we know the law more than just instinctively
.
This now brings us to these two verses and how God has written his law on our hearts. Think of the 10 Commandments, which is the only part of the Bible that was written by God’s hand, and how you already knew them. When you really think about it, God not only wrote these on stone tablets, but also inscribed them in our hearts. Here Paul outright says it.
If you look at different cultures throughout the world, you will notice a common thread of these laws. They did not have Moses bring them down from the mountain, no they were already written on their hearts. Sure you can find a culture that ignores these truths, but I bet if you study them for a few years the underlying law will be exposed in their actions or responses. I think we can go on for years analyzing what is truly inscribed on our hearts, but I think it’s safe to say God wrote the 10 Commandments on them. We just need to follow our hearts more often and ensure that we have not trained it away from the written law.
