Psalm 136:1 –
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
The first thing I notice about this Psalm is every verse has the line “His faithful love endures forever.” If you think about forever it becomes mind blowing. We consider a world with limits, to us time ends when we die. But God has been around forever. Think of the beginning of time, what happened before then? What happens after the end of time? It just keeps ticking, always has and always will, just like God’s love. Crazy when you think about it.
The majority of this Psalm is giving thanks, which is one thing we rarely do in life. Let’s step back from God and look at our day to day interaction with others. Do we thank others for their help? How about the cashier who just rang you up? You know the one with the attitude or who was slow! How about the waitress who brought you the wrong item? Sure these are examples of poor service, but do you thank people when the service is average? Now think about God who serves you daily and since He’s not in your face it’s not on your mind to thank Him always. But this Psalm reminds us otherwise, be thankful even for the simple things in life!
Now if you have ever watched or read “The Secret” it details how a thankful spirit is necessary for you to get things. I really like the concepts explained in this book, less the lack of emphasis on God. It gave me clarity on who and what God is in our world. But it also clarified how our relationship with God should be. We should be thankful for everything in our current state, we should be thankful for our past and have faith the future will be better. It’s difficult “talking” to someone who is unseen, but know He is everywhere and therefore can hear you. And believe me nothing goes unheard! So give thanks to the Lord, His love does endure forever!
