Fame for Yourself or for God?

Genesis 11:6 –

“Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!

Background, they are repopulating the earth after the flood and are building a tower which “will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world”. God then scatters them and confuses the languages.

God did not like this because of unity but because of motive, they wanted to be famous. How many times have we done something for our own fame and fallen flat on our faces?? It happens time and time again at least for me!! If you are motivated to do Gods will and just happen to stumble on fame, fine … just don’t let it consume you.

The people of Babel needed to refocus their purpose away from self. That is where we find problems … when our focus becomes self and not others. Jesus did this time and time again … he was a super-star but did not focus on himself, but on God the father.

You may notice I skipped chapter 10 … it’s all lineage from Noah’s sons.

Proverbs 22:22 –

“Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court.”
