Verse 14:4 has an interesting perspective:

Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.

This sound like easy times not having to muck the stalls! But when you think about it, the work is not being done in the stalls but in the fields. This proverb is simply saying work hard always and not rest for the right time.

Verse 14:11 makes a unique comparison:

The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.

We always look at houses are solid while tents are temporary. In this instance a house of a “wicked” cannot stand to a tent of the “upright”. I think of the story of the three little pigs and how two of the houses could not stand up to the wolf. But this is less about the structure and what is going on inside. A structure built on honor and truth, no matter the construction, will be much stronger than something built on lies and deceit.

Verse 14:12 is simple yet difficult to live:

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.

For “guys” especially we tend to let the “other” brain drive our bodies more than we should. This is where the “if it feels good, do it” mentality spawns more trouble. There are always consequences when you focus on pleasure more than what God intended. Drinking and sex are the two most common problems when done outside God’s limits.

Verse 14:23 is simple:

In all toil there is profit,
but mere talk tends only to poverty.

Our family works very different, my idea is to figure out what needs to be done and systematically forge ahead. Where mama just toils right from the start, sure it may need rebuilding a few times, but work is being done, not just talk. So I have a tough one on this, since my “planning” gets taken as “mere talk.” The key here is to take action and not just have grandiose plans with no start.

Verse 15:1 is a key to dealing with others:

A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

I wish I would have lived this more as I lived my life. I tended to get the nickname “the instigator” more places than not. I would stir up anger in others with harsh words, but would often deflect that anger to others. If I would have “worded” my “peanut gallery” comments more carefully, a conflict would have been avoided.

Verse 15:6 makes me wonder some time:

In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,
but trouble befalls the income of the wicked.

This makes me wonder if I am doing sometime wrong. We seem to always have financial trouble between debt and lack of income to support our properties. At the same time or “treasure” which is causing such a burden financially is something that should pay off in the “long run”. My main fault was spending more than I made, not setting aside 10% for savings and 10% for God and “fudging the numbers” on loan applications. Granted I would “estimate” income based on what the loan office suggested I needed, but nothing was verified or accurate. Hence the housing “bubble” since I was obviously not the ONLY one doing this. The big difference is, at a great personal cost, we are “current”.

So we got some great “investments” but obtained them with “wicked” acts. Although basically “righteous” our poor management has had us waiting for “trouble” to “befall” us.

Verse 15:33 closes the chapters out with just some sound advice:

The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honour.

Fear drifting from His “instructions” in this Bible and humbly live your life. Simple rules to live by!

Proverbs 14 – 15 Time for a rapid fire go through these two chapters.
