I know that has been (and may still be) me many times in my life. The “good times” seem never ending and planning for the future gets dismissed. Then a layoff happens or a turn in the economy, and things change.

The person who though they walked in integrity, only to find out that they were wrong. I often lived here and because of past debts still technically do. The Bible is simple as far as how we should live our lives financially, with integrity. The basic 10-10-80 plan needs to be in effect. Tithe 10%, save 10% and live on 80%. Then add in proper business dealings, treating others fairly, work hard, serve others and live as Jesus would, then you will live a life of integrity and it will not matter if you make $10,000 or $10,000,000.

Verse 19:2 talks about ones desires:

Desire without knowledge is not good,
and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.

Think about how many times you have wanted something and gone after it, only never to obtain the goal. Often when we fall back and analyze the results we find the biggest problem is between or ears. We jump into a task or chasing something without full knowledge about what is required.

The footnote for “desire” also implies “a soul” could be used here. That changes the meaning a bit, since we all desire a connection with God, maybe this is what’s Solomon is talking about and not the new house or job. As we study and read the Bible things become reviled to us that bring us closer to God. As “desire” for a relationship without trying to develop that relationship is “not good.” We need to desire to gain more knowledge to fill our “soul” and make the connection.

Verse 19:20 is an important lesson for all:

Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.

Often as we get older, especially in our late teens and early 20’s, this tends to be ignored. Our parents become fools and we know what is right. Funny thing is they become wiser again as we get older. Often as we get older and become “set” in our ways, we tend to dismiss this again. One must always be open to advice and instruction to continue to grow as a person.

Now as I say this, one must be discerning and not accept advice from an idiot! So again a line must be drawn between who you listen to and to ensure you are not shutting out the truly wise people.

Proverbs 19 Verse 19:1 makes us think about of excesses today: Better is a poor person who walks in his integritythan one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.
