The initial question that came to mind was does God dwell in darkness or light? Next I was wondering if Solomon was implying that God was dwelling in dark before the temple was built. Now if you really think about it, if God is everywhere then He is in both darkness and light. Technically he also dwells in heaven and hell, but that’s another subject.

After doing a study on this verse I think the most logically explanation was Solomon was trying to remind them of the exodus where God guided them in a fiery pillar during the night and a dark cloud during the day. I think he was reminding them of this since later in the chapter a dark cloud descended on the temple and fire consumed the offering.

Verse 6:18 really states my problem with the idea of temple’s or churches being “God’s house”:

“But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built!

I think we tend to put God in a box when we build ornate buildings for Him to live. You think about it, if God is everywhere why would he need a temple? He would always be there anyway. I think man needs to do this more for themselves than God, since the building can house and attract more people. Although 2 or more gathered together shows numbers are not key, I believe the larger the assembly is praying in unison, the greater the “energy” and power of the prayer.

Verse 9:7 is an observation by the Queen of Sheba:

Happy are your wives! Happy are these your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom!

Think about the observation here that the queen notices the people are joyous knowing their king is wise! I would love the ability to have someone that wise guide me, sure I can get it from the Bible but it tends to be forgotten quickly by me. A “mentor” would be nice in this business and spiritual time in my life.

Interestingly the study Bible had a reference to 1 Kings10:8 which had this same line quoted but instead of “wives” it said “men”. I wonder why the difference? Is this like the old group game where you get in a circle and whisper something to one person and see how it changed when it gets back to you? You see this often in the Gospel where one story will be slightly different and this is how the “critics” debunk the Bible. Einstein’s Theory of Relativity explains it all. The story is in the eye of the observer, but as Einstein explains it the observer may have completely different observations of the same event. How would a person describe a train passing them verse a passenger on the train describing the same passage? Both would be similar, but slightly different. The writer of Kings versus the writer of Chronicles may have had a different interpretation of what was said. Where one writer may have been closer to the Queen and may have written what she really meant, not accidently said.

The Gospels may be interpreted differently by a writer with extensive knowledge of the Law versus a writer who was very close to Jesus. Don’t let people rock your faith and understanding of what the message is because there are slight differences in the stories.

2 Chronicles 6 – 10 Verse 6:1 had me scratching my head especially after reading on: Then Solomon said, “The LORD has said that he would dwell in thick darkness.
