\n32 \u2013 35<\/p>\n
Jacob was wrestling with a \u201cman\u201d which may be God. During
\nthis he is told in verse 32:28 of a name change:<\/p>\n
You will no longer
\ngo by the name Jacob. From now on, your name will be<\/i> Israel because you
\nhave wrestled with God and humanity, and you have prevailed.<\/p>\n
Interestingly it\u2019s not until chapter 35 and
\nGod states the name change again that it finally changes. This is one of those
\nsections that one has to wonder who the \u201cman\u201d was that he was wrestling and
\nwhat the meaning of that was. Why did he dislocate Jacob\u2019s hip?<\/p>\n
Leading up to this encounter Jacob was
\nstressing about meeting his brother. Now this man who conned is father and
\nbrother to get the birthright and blessing. He lied and manipulated events to
\nbe in his favor now had to face his brother. He faced God before having to face
\nhis brother. Interestingly in crippling Jacob, God is showing us that He is
\nlooking for the unlikely to build his nation, not just the rich, dynamic and
\npowerful. What man would think as the logical choice, God realizes that would
\nonly provide doubt it was his glory.<\/p>\n
Chapter 34 has a disturbing story about
\nJacob and Rachel\u2019s daughter Dinah. A Hivite named Shecham rapes Dinah and then
\nfalls in love with her. He then asks her hand in marriage, yet ends up killed
\nin a fit of revenge by her brothers. This story is disturbing and shows how
\nbarbaric many cultures are. In western civilization we consider this rare, but
\nit still happens. I don\u2019t have any comment other than people who read this
\nsomehow tie it into God\u2019s truths, when it\u2019s just a historical account and is no
\nway an example of how man should live a Godly life.<\/p>\n
The 12 tribes of Israel are not set and we
\nsee how the name arrived. The next story is of Joseph, where God takes the most
