Verse 7:1 opens with a statement to his son:<\/p>\n
My son, live according to what I am
\ntelling you;
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0guard my instructions as you would a treasure\u00a0deep<\/i>\u00a0within
\nyou.<\/p>\n
Solomon wants to make sure his son follows the righteous path
\nand not drift like grandpa. I thought of his later drifts in life and figured
\nit was the \u201cdo as I say, not as I do\u201d proverbs. Also, I was hoping we would
\nmove away from the evils of deceiving women, unfortunately that is not the
\ncase.<\/p>\n
Verse 7:5 starts the warnings:<\/p>\n
And they will keep you from\u00a0the
\narms of<\/i>\u00a0another woman\u2014
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0protect you<\/i>\u00a0from the enchantress who
\nentices men\u00a0into her bed<\/i>.<\/p>\n
I think as men we don\u2019t take these serious as a threat to
\nour families and faith. Granted I lived most of my life in ignorance of
\npotential advances. One instance early on in my marriage I was left a note. It
\nwas talking about a song by Heart and ended in XOXO. I showed it to Katy and
\nasked what it meant. She explained the song was about two people in
\nrelationships that just wanted to mess around and the XOXO was \u201chugs and
\nkisses.\u201d <\/p>\n
We had a good laugh over that, but at the same time it was
\ndisturbing that someone would make that suggestion. When you look at the
\nstatistics, affairs break up marriages more than anything else except maybe
\nmoney. \u00a0So although Solomon\u2019s advice is repetitive,
\nthere is a reason for this we men need it drilled into our heads. <\/p>\n
The second best advice I have heard was expounding on 1
\nCorinthians 6:18 and telling us to run from sin. In the example PK gave he had
\na women come into his office to discuss marital problems and made an advance.
\nHis response was to drop everything and run home, literally. He did not stop or
\nsay why he was leaving, he just ran away. <\/p>\n
Solomon gives an example of a married woman enticing a young
\nman into her arms for the rest of the chapter. It drives home how everyone
\nneeds to avoid sin and when faced with temptations like this to run away.
\nUnfortunately later in life Solomon did not do this and got sucked into a
\nvortex of worshiping lesser gods. So we need to learn from both Solomon\u2019s words
\nand his actions.<\/p>\n
